Notes:The famous Van Diemen marque was founded in 1973 by Ross Ambrose and Ralph Firman Sr., whose children Marcos Ambrose, Ralph Firman Jr. and Natasha Firman have each had successful racing careers. The company was named after Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania, where Ross Ambrose was born and lived before moving to the UK to co-found the company. The most well-known of the Van Diemen’s is the Formula Ford chassis and these racing cars been at the forefront of that class of motorsport leading it to become the largest bespoke manufacturer of open-wheelers in the world. The company’s purpose-built factory was located at the famous Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit allowing teams to test the cars right off the production line. According to factory archives, RF86 Chassis 1115 was originally supplied in Signal Red on 21st March 1986 to Sturl-Ziemelin, with gear box no: 5887 with a Scholar engine. It is not known exactly how, when or from whom this car came into Clem’s possession but it is believed it has been used exclusively to provide enthusiastic beginners with the opportunity to have a run around Mallala on club days. The Van Diemen RF86 Formula Ford is one of the most sought after cars in Historic Formula Ford and dominated the recent 50th anniversary race meeting at Sydney Motorsport Park against later versions of the marque. This car would require recommissioning for racing and to be considered eligible for a CAMS Certificate of Description for Historic Formula Ford racing in Australia. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
