• Lot Description:
  Slessor, Kenneth - A Collection of Late Proofs of Slessor's 1932 publication, Cuckooz Countrey
  and other Related Materials, pasted into an octavo volume with cream paper boards and with 'Galley Proofs of Cuckooz Countrey / Kenneth Slessor' in gilt lettering on the spine. The title page bears a typed note stating that it includes 'the first sixty pages of poetry arranged in order of pagination by the poet ' and that 'the galleys are in order of setting.' It further states that Stone acquired the proofs in the early 1940s when the publisher of 'Cuckooz Countrey', Frank Johnson, 'was finding the going hard as a result of the scarcity of paper to carry on his publishing business' and mentions that the additional material was acquired much later. Additional materials include: a letter from Thelma Herring dated 8 October 1955 offering Slessor the editorship of Southerly in succession to Professor Howarth; Slessor's typed review of Dal Stivens' 1958 novel, The Wide Arch, recommending that it not be sponsored by the Commonwealth Literary Fund (Slessor served on the advisory board form 1953-1971), and a typed copy of the revised version of Guy Howarth's Paean for Kenneth Slessor. Newspaper articles and other materials tipped in. Ex libris of Walter Stone on front free endpaper and liberal use of Stone's stamp throughout.
