  Shaw. Nielson. John.
  Three Manuscript Letters by John Shaw Neilson and Related Items. including a one page manuscript letter, with text on both sides, dated 27 September 1938 and dictated by Nielson to his brother, Frank. Nielson's correspondant is his friend and biographer, James Devaney, who helped him with what was to be his final publication, 'Beauty Imposes', of 1938. Nielson suggests changes to 'The Vine that is a Friend' and 'The Poor Can Feed the Birds' from that collection. He goes on to apologise that Devaney 'has had so much worry over the booklet' and further laments that his brother is due to go away the next day 'so I wil not have him for a clerk now,' a concern given Nielson's poor eyesight. Two other letters concern more mundane matters, such as Nielson's quarterly dues to the Bread and Cheese Club (dated 20 February 1940) and the Education Gazette (dated 4 January 1928). All of the above are marked with Walter Stone's stamp. Also included is a draft of a letter from Frank Nielson to Bill FitzHenry of The Bulletin, dated 30 August 1956, suggesting that he consider a previously unpublished example of his brother's light verse, the manuscript of whch was in Frank Neilson's possession. One can only assume that the verse was 'The Scorpion', of 1938 a corrected typewritten proof of which is included in this lot. Also including Raymond Lindsay's book plate for Walter Stone.
