  • Notes:
Ransom Eli Olds was the founder of the Olds Motor Works Company, at Lansing in Michigan, USA, with the simple but effective 1903 Oldsmobile 5hp curved dash runabout, one of the earliest cars in the world to be put into series production. After differences of opinion at boardroom level Olds departed Oldsmobile and was also, under the terms of separation, precluded from using the name Olds in relation to any future automobile company with which he might be involved or establish. Undeterred, in 1904, using his initials, REO, Olds new company, also based in Lansing, Michigan, began the production of its first vehicles, with the first cars shown to the public in January 1905 at the New York Automobile Show. Reo built cars and trucks (‘Speedwagons’, whence the classic rock band from the late 1970s and early 1980s took its name), before the effects of the Great Depression brought car production to a halt in 1936. Reo continued to make trucks until finally closing its doors in 1975. The excitingly named Reo Flying Cloud, with its connotations of speed, comfort and movement, was available as a sedan, but also, and much more interestingly, as a two-door coupe with a “dickie seat” behind for extra passengers who could communicate to the front through the wind-down rear window. First launched in 1927 but still in production until the end in 1936, it is thought that less than 100 Flying Clouds still exist. This Reo Flying Cloud coupe was delivered to Queensland, Australia in 1933 and it is believed that the owner of the dealership to which it was delivered kept it as his own private vehicle for many, many years. In the hands of just its second owner this Flying Cloud was restored at the end of the last century. It was repainted in its original deep red colour and also authentically re-upholstered to match its original interior. With everything, we are told, including all instruments and lights, still in good working order the car still retains its authentic six-volt electrical system. At the time of restoration, the motor was rebuilt and fitted with an electric fuel pump. It still maintains its semi-automatic transmission. It still bears the rare side mirrors fitted to the two spare wheels, as well as the original Reo badged luggage rack. Discreet traffic indicators have been fitted front and rear for safety. This car, considered to be in near concours condition passed into the hands of just its third and current owner in 2007. In the past five years the car has been sparingly used.
