  A reproduction photograph of “Black Cat” Catalina Flying Boat VH-PBL

• Notes:
  Flown for the first time in 1935 the Catalina commenced operations in Australia with the RAAF (A24 Series) in 1940. Aircraft used as minelayers were camouflaged black for night flying and were referred to as “Black Cats”. The aircraft often flew extended trips to the Philippines and Hong Kong on minelaying missions.
