  • Notes:
Mercedes-Benz is one of the best-known and respected automotive brands in the world. The origins of the company are traced to Karl Benz ‘s creation of the first petrol-powered car, which was financed by Bertha Benz and patented in January 1886, and Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach‘s conversion of a stagecoach by the addition of a petrol engine later that year. The Mercedes automobile first appeared in 1901 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. The first Mercedes-Benz branded motorcars were released in 1926. Throughout the 1930s, Mercedes-Benz produced spectacular cars such as the 540Ks, fabled as the luxury sporting car and limousine of the European aristocracy, and infamously by the Nazi regime. Not only the power statement of despots and countesses, Mercedes-Benz has been at the forefront of high performance and safety innovation throughout their illustrious motor racing career and occasional track tragedies, and this innovative technology has been adopted by many aspiring car makers throughout the twenty-century. Not only this, the marque is still so glamourous and stylish that even an association with the name Mercedes-Benz and the elegant Tri-Star remains a symbol of excellence. In 1959, Mercedes-Benz debuted four new models at the Frankfurt Show including the 220SE all of which shared the unitary-construction body and all-round independent suspension. This new and beautiful car featured a wider radiator shell, wrap-around windscreen, wider rear window and the timelessly elegant vertical twin headlights. This model series retained the fuel-injected and single-overhead-camshaft engine of the previous 220, and with increased compression ratio of 8.7:1, it now had a top speed of107mph (170km/h) with 60mph (97km/h) attainable in under 14 seconds. By 1961, the coupe and convertible models became among the most desirable luxury vehicles available, especially without the rather ungainly tail fins of the earlier saloons. More modern in style, the in-line 6-cylinder 220SE coupé and convertible were equipped with a rev-counter, leather upholstery and four-speed automatic transmission and front disc brakes as standard. The no-expense-spared luxury of the Mercedes-Benz W111 series 220SE cars was also enhanced by the distinguishing chrome work and distinctive twin rear bumpers. The new model range was a far better handling, faster and better engineered car than the superseded Pontons, with the option of power steering and Hydrak automatic clutch. About 14,173 220SE Coupes were built between 1961 and 1965. This stylish and luxurious Australian-delivered Mercedes Benz coupe has been held by its current owner since 1985, and a meticulously kept file of receipts relating to all work undertaken on the car details the maintenance and replacements undertaken throughout this 32-year custodianship. Major works include: re-upholstering the very rare Stuttgart factory-fitted option of four slim-profile bucket seats (providing the classic 2-plus-2 interior) in Connelly cherry red leather; restoring the rare Brazilian zebra-wood (Zebrano) veneered dashboard and instrument cluster, and reinstating a working original Becker ‘Mexico’ radio-cassette carefully selected to maintain the car’s originality. The car has been proudly cared for, and driven as a daily car by its fastidious owner, who is now reluctantly selling for health reasons. The interior of this car is everything that Mercedes-Benz stood for during the 1960s, both beautiful and superbly functional. This coupe’s interior with the rare four bucket seats configuration is believed one of only three examples known to have been imported new into Australia, according to Mercedes-Benz records, and a total of only 214 220SEb coupes believed ever imported by Mercedes-Benz Australia. The car has recently been fitted with five new tyres including the spare. The odometer reading of 171,000 miles (approx.) is believed to be genuine. This much-admired Melbourne-based car was taken to New Zealand by its loyal current owner in1995 and returned with him to Melbourne in 2008, following his retirement as foundation Director of the new Christchurch Art Gallery. Mossgreen is proud to present a discerning buyer with a fantastic opportunity to acquire this handsome collectors’ car at auction, providing the next custodian with the opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of driving in classical style and elegance.
