Charles Heathcote Tatham was employed as a draughtsman by Henry Holland, who helped him to visit Italy. He arrived in Rome in May 1794 & stayed there until 1796, when he was forced to leave by Napoleon’s advance. Whilst in Rome he met a wide circle of Artists & Architects. On his return to England he practised as an Architect but his severe Neo-classical style was of limited popular appeal & his commissions were few. He designed the Sculpture Gallery at Castle Howard for the 5th Earl of Carlisle
