1970 FORD ESCORT LOTUS TWIN CAM MK I

  • Notes:
The Ford Escort was introduced in 1968. It proved an incredibly popular motor car with over two million units produced until it was replaced by the new shape Mk II in 1975. The Escort, even in its most basic 1100cc form handled and drove well with good steering and brakes. When equipped with the Lotus twin cam engine and two double-barrel Weber carburettors, four branch free-flow exhaust with twin valve operated overhead camshafts it became a very competitive motor car, racking up numerous international race and rally victories. The four-speed manual four-cylinder 1600cc provided a top speed in excess of 100 mph but more importantly it handled precisely and was great fun to drive. If at times it was a little harsh and basic, it provided a driving experience in its purest form, weighing just 830 kg, with front and rear drum brakes, independent McPherson strut front and rear live axle suspension, and was a worthy successor to the legendary Lotus Cortina Mk I. The magnificent example of the increasingly sought after and desirable Ford Escort Lotus Twin Cam Mk I was built in 1970 in the UK and of course has the C49 chassis designation proving it to be an original car. It is in outstanding condition all round both mechanically and visually in its Sun Yellow livery coating its straight body. This 1970 Lotus Twin Cam was featured in Issue 338, May 12th 2016, of Unique Cars magazine. John Bowe, one of Australia's most revered motor racing drivers who is a two-time Bathurst 1000 winner and one of only five drivers ever with over 200 starts in both V8 Touring and Supercars described this actual car thus in that magazine's comparative test, "The Escort is just a great little car. The contrast between the four of them was quite huge and the pricing was quite different, though the intent was similar - a hero car for the brand. It's like a little go-kart. It's noisy, fun, it's got really direct steering. Awesome induction noise, cute little engine - it's like a toy. As I've said a million times, it's so light. Even though it's not super fast, it's quick because it's light. I love the styling, I reckon those Mk I Escorts are among the most iconic small cars ever made, right up there with the Mini. I'd have one. I remember the engines back in the day were a bit suspect, but modern day practices can fix all that. These cars are unspoiled, not enhanced in any way, which I like. I like them as they were because when you drive them it's like stepping back into that period." This vehicle will be sold unregistered
