  • Notes:
Known as 'the little Ferrari', the Dino was named after Enzo Ferrari's son. The 246 Dino was built in three series between 1968 and 1974, all powered by a 2.4 litre V6 engine with differences in wheels and modifications to the windshield wipers and engine ventilation. The Dino 246 Ferrari was the first Ferrari to be produced in large numbers, attracting praise and adulation for its ground-breaking design. A total of 2,295 Dino 246GTs were produced. The English 'Motor' magazine applauded the Dino 246 GT when it was tested in July 1971: "Perfection is an absolute quality found only in nature or that part of it we call genius: it is rarely applicable to the collection of compromises known as the motor car. Occasionally, however, we do test cars that closely approach perfection, missing it only in details of execution or performance. Into this rare category comes the 2.4 litre transverse mid-engined Ferrari Dino 246GT. " The first transverse-engined Dino unveiled at the 1967 Turin Show was powered by a Tipo 135CS 2.4-litre light alloy 65 degree V6. The 1971 246 GT contains the same configuration but with a cast-iron block and a capacity increase to 2.4 litres. With a maximum of 195 bhp at 7600 rpm, this engine has 15 bhp more than the Fiat Dino version. The Ferrari Dino was extremely quick, despite being quite heavy for a sports car (23.3 cwt. unladen), as it was able to achieve 0-60 mph from rest in 7.1 sec, and 100 mph in 17.6 seconds. It could comfortably achieve a maximum speed of 148 mph. Its impressive performance at high speeds is attributed to excellent aerodynamics with a flat fuel consumption curve which can remain comfortably above 20mpg at 100 mph. In addition, the Dino's excellent road holding at high speeds proved resistant to cross winds. The Dino's 2.4 litre V6 engine was so successful, it was used in other Italian performance cars, most notably the Lancia Stratos. In terms of handling, the Dino 246 GT had a number of advantages including its racing-style front and rear double-wishbone suspension. And, being mid-engined, more weight on the rear wheels gave excellent traction, especially in slippery conditions. Reduced weight at the front allowed the use of wider tyres for more direct steering without the need of power steering. The result was the ability to go around corners in a manner that made ordinary cars seem wholly inadequate. Few sports cars provide a better drive than the Dino Ferrari. With a firm ride at low speed, the suspension soaked up undulations without pitch, float or bottoming, and this greatly contributed to the feeling of security that has become characteristic of the model. Uncharacteristically however of some Italian cars, the Dino has a small steering wheel and well-located pedals and drivers, regardless of size, have a spacious and comfortable driving position. Chassis *02424* is a standard, early-production European "E Model" version Dino 246GT/E. Its assembly was LHD domestic "European" and it was delivered in August of 1971. The Carrozzeria Scaglietti Job/Assembly Sequence Number for chassis 02424 is "151E". It was sequentially recorded as 151E of the estimated two hundred 'Series E' cars built of a total of 832 cars (all 246GT's) produced in 1971. The Ferrari factory Certificate No. 0020188 records the build completion date as August 24th, 1971. The car was ordered and delivered to the official Ferrari Dealer for Rome and Bologna, MOTOR S.a.s. di Carla Allegretti e C. It was assembled with no known options and originally finished in Red (Rosso Chiaro 20-R-190) with a black interior (Nero 161 black vinyl). The exact date of importation and conversion is unknown but the vehicle is listed in the Australian Ferrari Register of 1988-89, Registration No. OJO250. The register later lists the car as owned by Mark West (1990-92) and David Porritt (1993) followed by the current owner since 2006. In 2007, an extensive restoration commenced with Ferrari specialists in Adelaide which involved the vehicle being completely stripped of components in preparation for refurbishment. The engine, gearbox and clutch were removed, dismantled and rebuilt as required. The body shell underwent back-to-bare metal treatment and was repainted to the original factory colour 'Rosso Chiaro 20-R-190' in 2-pack finish. The chassis, mechanical compartments and wheels were prepared and repainted to original factory colours (list of extensive works undertaken available upon request). During this restoration period, the car was fully re-trimmed by Alan Smith Vehicle Trimming, including: roof lining, seats rebuilt using Cicognani foam, Muirhead Sateen black leather hides to seats, firewall and doors, and period correct interior floor carpets and heel pads. Re-trimming of all vinyl, boot lid woollen fabric and carpet, and 'mousehair' dash was completed in fabrics supplied by HVL Products, The Netherlands. The car also has a period correct and working Becker 'Mexico' Cassette Radio and electric aerial. Included with the sale are the correct and rare key fob and Neiman/Silca Italy keys, the owner's pouch with all correct books, warranty cards, elettrico clock tag, Becker radio hand-book and original Shell duster. Spare keys plus a spare leather pouch and small format 'operating, maintenance and service handbook' are included to carry in the vehicle. Also included is a period correct tool roll with a full set of original tools, jack, jack bag, wheel nut wrench, wheel chock and (replacement) emergency triangle. This completely restored Ferrari on offer presents a rare opportunity to acquire an extraordinary, matching number 246 Dino Ferrari Berlinetta which is a PininFarina designed, Scaglietti built, rolling work of art.
