  • Notes:
The years immediately after the second world war were difficult ones for Lancia, the company founded in 1906 by the early motor racing pioneer Vincenzo Lancia. In 1948 Vincenzo's son Gianni Lancia was appointed General Manager and the process of reconstruction, as it did for much of Italy began. Whilst much of Lancia's machine tools were obsolescent and the company was heavily in debt Gianni Lancia was able to count upon a group of excellent designers and technicians. Together they outlined the idea for a new luxury gran turismo automobile and the legendary Lancia Aurelia was born. In 1955 the Lancia family gave control of the eponymous car manufacturer to Carlo Pesenti. Pesenti along with Head of Design, Antonio Fessia, started work on the process to update the Aurelia with a new model. Thus the new Lancia Flaminia, like its predecessor the Aurelia named after an ancient Roman road, in this case the one leading from Rome to Rimini on the Adriatic Coast, was born. The production Flaminia berlina was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in April 1957. Italian coachbuilders from 1958 came up with several variations and at the Turin Salon in November 1958, Carrozzeria Touring of Milan offered the aluminium bodied GT two-seater coupé constructed using its superleggera (super light tubular) construction. From 1962 Touring's GT benefited from its V6 engine now being 2.8 litres, rather than 2.5 litres, and featuring triple Weber carburettors, which at the time Car & Driver magazine tested to over 100 mph in third gear and 125 mph (200km/h) in top gear. Between 1958 and 1967 just 1646 Flaminia GT were built and of these only 168 were made with the 2.8 litre, triple weber engine making it a rare car indeed. This example of a highly original Lancia Flaminia 2.8 GT coupé by Touring Superleggera was delivered new to Europe in 1963, most likely to France and made its way to Australia via the USA. It still maintains its original left hand drive configuration. Re-upholstered in biscuit leather interior, with 'blulancia' colour paintwork both of which remain in good condition, it has been excellently maintained and used in club events by a highly respected marque specialist. This vehicle is an outstanding specimen from the great period of Italian automobile styling and manufacture in the 1960s. As Car & Driver magazine said at the time, "Slide into the shapely leather seat, swing shut the close-fitting aluminium door, fire up the unique V6 and discover how elegant earthbound motion can become". This vehicle will be sold unregistered
