  • Notes:
Rare: one of the most appealing of all illustrated Australian botanical books from the early decades of settlement and a fundamental work on Australian botany. Robert Sweet was a prominent professional horticulturist and energetic promoter of exotic botany for English gardens and hot–houses. The species depicted in the 56 elegant and vibrantly handcoloured plates were drawn from live plants grown from seed in London, in the main by Sweet himself, making this the first work of Australian botany to be based entirely on living specimens. The original drawings were made by Edwin Dalton Smith, one of the best botanical artists of the period. In this handsome work the European public had a beautiful and extensively illustrated catalogue of newly–discovered South Seas flowering plants for the first time. Ferguson, 1144; Great Flower Books (1990), p. 143; Nissen, 1924.
