  Martens, Conrad. Sketches in the Environs of Sydney; Being part of a series of sketches
  intended to illustrate the scenery of New South Wales… [wrapper title]. Oblong quarto, 16 lithographed plates (of 20), loosely enclosed in the wrappers of three parts (two of these distressed), some plates hand-finished by the artist, preserved in a folding half morocco box. Sydney, Published by the Artist, 1850-1.
• Notes:
  Very rare: to eke out the limited income he earned from his painting and teaching, Martens published a set of twenty hand-finished lithographed views of Sydney and the surrounding countryside in 1850-1. These twenty views were first issued in two sets, totalling five parts. In July 1851, after the publication of the first edition had been completed, Martens issued – also in five parts – another impression of the plates as plain lithographs without the added washes and tints which he applied in the first edition. Martens was one of the foremost colonial artists of his time and played a key role in the history of Australian art and his work is properly much prized but both editions, indeed even single parts, of this splendid oblong quarto work are very rare.
