  • Lot Description:
Maclehose, James. Carmichael, John (illustrations by). The Picture of Sydney; and Stranger’s Guide
in New South Wales, for 1838. Embellished with forty three engravings of the public buildings and picturesque land and water views in and near Sydney. Duodecimo, with folding engraved map of Sydney (very slightly shaved), and 43 engraved illustrations on 29 leaves (many printed on coloured papers and one folding; a few slightly stained), later half morocco, spine gilt-decorated, top edge gilt. Sydney, James Maclehose, [1838].
  • Notes:
The first issue (of two) of this very early example of urban topography. Maclehose’s Stranger’s Guide was published as a guidebook for visitors to Sydney, with delicate engravings by John Carmichael. It was the first publication of its type produced in Australia; the numerous illustrations provide a valuable – and an, essentially, unique – visual record of Sydney fifty years after the arrival of the First Fleet. This is a nicely associated copy from the collection of Lord Rosebery, British Prime Minister in 1894-95, with his bookplate and his small blind stamp at head of title and pp. 99/100. Ferguson, 2539; Wantrup, 224a.
