Searle, Soho, a most attractive copy. London, James Ridgway, 1839.
  • Notes:
First edition, first issue, of the first comprehensive account of the botany of Western Australian, describing in detail the known vegetation of the floristically significant south-west corner of Western Australia. Lindley, Professor of Botany at London University, based this botanical record on a herbarium of 1000 species and opens his Sketch with the observation that “the frequent arrival of seeds from this Colony, the excellent state in which they are received, and the facility with which further supplies can be procured, appear to render some Botanical account of this remarkable country a desirable appendage to a work which, like the Botanical Register, forms an original record of new plants introduced, or worthy of introduction, to our Gardens...”. Here first published as part of Edwards’s Botanical Register, Lindley’s work was appended to the index volume to the first twenty-three volumes of that series. The full title is, accordingly, Appendix to the First Twenty-three volumes of Edwards’s Botanical Register. Consisting of a complete Alphabetical and Systematical Index of Names, Synonyms and Matter. Together with a Sketch of the Vegetation of the Swan River Colony… In 1840 a second issue of Lindley’s work was issued under its own title by Ridgway. Ferguson, 2791.
