  • Lot Description:
Leichhardt, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig. Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia
from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, a distance of upwards of 3000 miles, during the years 1844 – 1845. Two volumes, octavo, text with frontispiece and six aquatint plates (one folding) and cased in the original dark olive green cloth of the primary issue, together with the separately-issued three-sheet map in the original publisher’s matching primary issue cloth case (ribbon ties gone), the fine Sir Thomas Phillipps copy with his characteristic inked press-mark on the front pastedown of the map folder and on the recto of one sheet of the map. London, T. & W. Boone, 1847. With the rare three-sheet map.
  • Notes:
First edition: the handsome Sir Thomas Phillipps copy of one of the most important works of Australian inland exploration. In the course of this harrowing journey, Leichhardt and his party explored over three thousand miles of completely unknown country in fourteen months, opening up a vast and valuable area of the interior. Despite poor bushcraft and constant harassment from Aborigines, Leichhardt’s meandering journey from Brisbane to Port Essington ranks among Australia’s most successful expeditions. His scientific and geographic work were greatly admired during his lifetime and, after he vanished on a later expedition, his unknown fate became part of the mythology of European Australia. The separately-issued three-sheet map is one of the great rarities of Australian exploration literature. Abbey, 579 (text only); Ferguson, 4571 (text only); Richards, 101; Wantrup, 138a (text) and 139 (map).
