Lot Description:Hodgkinson, Clement. Australia, from Port Macquarie to Moreton Bay
with descriptions of the Natives, their Manners and Customs, the Geology, Natural Productions, Fertility, and Resources of that Region; first explored and surveyed by order of the Colonial Government. Octavo, with a frontispiece, six other plates, and a full-page map, uncut in original decorated green cloth, with the required first issue advertisements. London, T. and W. Boone, 1845. -
Notes:Only edition: Hodgkinson, a young engineer and surveyor, was contracted by the New South Wales government between 1840 and 1842 to explore and survey the northern river lands between Port Macquarie and Moreton Bay. His survey was the first extensive exploration of the area since its discovery by Oxley over twenty years before. In 1843 Hodgkinson returned to England where he published this account, one of very few books relating to the exploration of this part of northern New South Wales. This is a choice presentation copy, inscribed to the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy on the front endpaper: “To Captn. Beaufort, R.N., &c. &c. &c, with the publisher’s best respects”. Ferguson, 4067; Richards, 98; Wantrup, 158a.
