  Containing an account of the Surveyor General’s late expedition to two new ports; the discovery of Moreton Bay River, with the adventures for seven months there of two shipwrecked men; a route from Bathurst to Liverpool Plains; Together with other papers on the Aborigines, the geology, the botany, the timber, the astronomy, and the meteorology of New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land. Octavo, with aquatint frontispiece, two folding plates, and four folding maps, calf of the period rebacked and recornered. London, John Murray, 1825.

  First edition, first issue. Of high exploration interest, Field’s Geographical Memoirs includes, among many other papers, an account of Allan Cunningham’s important exploration to the Liverpool Plains, Currie’s excursion to the southward of Lake George, the journal of Barron Field’s trip across the Blue Mountains, and, perhaps most importantly, two accounts of Oxley’s 1823 Moreton Bay expedition to determine the best site for a new convict settlement, his only major expedition after 1818. While on that expedition Oxley discovered the Brisbane River which he explored, settling on the site of the future city of Brisbane. The book is illustrated by a fine frontispiece view of the Campbell River by John William Lewin, as well as two folding botanical plates and four folding maps. Ferguson, 1009; Wantrup, 108.
