Lot Description:Cramp, W.B. Narrative of a Voyage to India; of a Shipwreck on board the Lady Castlereagh
and a Description of New South Wales. Octavo, with the plate to Forbin (not needed for completeness), uncut in later cloth, Sir Thomas Ramsay copy with blindstamp. London, Sir Richard Phillips, 1823. -
Notes:First edition: voyage to New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land in 1818 on a convict transport – one of very few accounts of the voyage of a convict ship from this early period. Cramp made the voyage from England to Australia “determined… to try my fortune abroad”, returning by way of India. His accounts of the two Australian colonies, based on several months’ experience, are comparatively brief, but they give a good depiction of Sydney, Newcastle and Hobart under Macquarie as they appeared to a visitor. Ferguson, 901.
