  Lewin, John William. A Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales
  Collected, Engraved and faithfully Painted after Nature. Small folio, with 26 fine handcoloured engraved plates, four plates with 1825 watermarks as is common with this edition, in the original half calf and papered boards, rebacked and recornered, attractive printed label on the front board, new endpapers. London, J. H. Bohte, 1822.

  The third – first complete – edition. Lewin etched the plates for this book in New South Wales in 1804–5. The coppers were then sent to England where they were printed and published as The Birds of New Holland in 1808. For a reason which as yet remains unknown, the sixty–seven copies of this London edition destined for Lewin’s New South Wales subscribers never reached Sydney. Accordingly, in 1813, Lewin had George Howe print his famous Birds of New South Wales with their Natural History. This ‘Sydney Lewin’ included some newly etched plates not included in the London 1808 edition. Following Lewin’s death in 1819, his widow Maria returned to England with eight additional plates. There she arranged for the publication of this complete edition of 1822, to which were added the eight new plates (numbers 7, 19–25). This edition, in one form or another, remained in print until the mid–1840s, a ‘new edition’ being issued in 1838 with the same 1822 text sheets but with new impressions of the plates.
