  Bougainville, Louis Antoine de. Voyage autour du Monde, par la frégate du Roi, la Boudeuse, et la flûte l’Étoile
  en 1766, 1767, 1768 & 1769. Seconde édition, augmentée. Two volumes octavo, with 21 folding engraved charts and three folding plates, bound with the half-titles in polished calf of the period, spines gilt, all edges red, fine. Paris, Saillant & Nyon, 1772.
• Notes:
  France was a late entrant to the exploration of the South Seas and Bougainville’s was the first officially sanctioned and supported voyage of exploration. In November 1766 Bougainville set sail from Nantes for South America, setting off from Chile he sailed directly across the Pacific, taking possession of the Tuamotu Archipelago for France. He also took possession of Tahiti – his detailed account of the island and its people aroused great interest in Europe, where it became a significant source for the romantic vision of the South Pacific. After a long stay in Tahiti he visited Samoa and the New Hebrides. From there, assuming that these islands were Quirós’s “La Austrialia del Espiritu Santo”, he planned to sail directly west to clear up the mystery of the east coast of New Holland. Although he was on a direct course for the Queensland coast and might well have achieved his objective, the impenetrable Great Barrier Reef blocked his way and he was forced to turn north round New Guinea for Batavia.
