  • Notes:
In the pioneering times of motorcycle manufacturing in Britain, William J Montgomery forged a niche market in quality performance machines building his first in 1913, using a Morton and Weaver engine. He established his works in Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk moving to Coventry after WW1 following a cessation in business until 1922. An innovator of design and in the manner of Brough, Montgomery utilised the best proprietary components from other specialist companies while focusing on making frames and forks in-house, even supplying a number of frames and its own sprung fork to George Brough in Brough's formative days. By 1930, Montgomery had established a reputation for the manufacture of quality two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycles despite the factory being wiped out by fire in 1925. Throughout his career he experimented with sidecar design and actually competed himself in the 1923 Isle of Man TT sidecar race. WW2 brought an end to all production and Montgomery ceased trading in 1939, but not without leaving the legacies of a 147cc two-stroke to a 996cc v-twin powered by J.A.P. engines. Montgomery is remembered for its amazing 8-valve Anzani engined V-twin as being a notable and important rival to the Brough Superior SS100 and one of the twentieth centuries most awe inspiring motorcycles built for touring at high rates of speed. Equally poignant to the history of Montgomery is the story of J.A.P. J.A.P. began in 1902 when J.A. Prestwich and Co. started building motorcycle engines, becoming the engine of choice for high end performance motorcycle makers like Montgomery, Brough, Zenith and HRD. The main advantages of the J.A.P. V-twin engines were their excellent power to weight ratio and reliability. This Montgomery-J.A.P.1000cc V-twin was purchased dismantled and in need of total restoration from a collector in Melbourne. It is the original Montgomery frame and girder forks and the J.A.P engine is numbered correctly for the 1929 year. The J.A.P. 1000cc engine has undergone a full nut and bolt restoration according to the vendor utilising the engine and parts as found. Only the outer timing cover is new in the unbranded manner. The barrels, found to be in excellent condition have been lightly re-honed; the connecting rods were rebuilt; new valves; pistons and rings have been replaced. The flywheel has been rebuilt and balanced with new shafts installed and running with a pilgrim oil pump. It has the period correct and believed to be original heavy-weight Sturmey-Archer three-speed, four-stud gearbox together with the gearbox mounted original hand gear-change lever. The Lucas magneto and generator have been rebuilt and rewound. New front and rear guards have been made to replicate the original style and painted black with red pin striping; wheel rims re-laced and painted. The striking petrol tank finished in gleaming chrome plate bearing the distinct Montgomery insignia has been beautifully replicated to drawings and patterns of the original. The hand oiling delivery system is original. The new twin exhaust pipes and couple-mufflers are period correct to suit. A slightly later Amal carburettor has been fitted. Throughout this restoration meticulous attention has been paid to the quality of the craftsmanship, paintwork and chrome to ensure the Montgomery legacy is perpetuated. Recently completed, the vendor states the motorcycle is in sound running condition, having attended the All British Motorcycle Rally in Victoria in April, 2016 covering a solid 500kms without a miss. Rogers Bros of Swanston, Melbourne were the agents for 10hp J.A.P. powered Montgomery in the 1920s and regularly promoted their sale and support. It is therefore not beyond the realms of possibility that this machine was tendered in Melbourne and remained here throughout its life but the vendor is unable to substantiate the provenance since it was purchased some years ago. This beautifully restored Montgomery-J.A.P. V-twin offered is a unique and highly desirable opportunity to acquire a rare example of one of the most famous British motorcycles of the 1920s bearing all the hallmarks of its brilliant era in ready to ride condition.
