    A large Chinese Export crested green 'Fitzhugh' pattern oval dish
    decorated with four clusters of scholars' utensils and flower sprays and crest of an eagle and motto 'LAUS VIRTUTIS ACTIO', circa 1820,

  • Notes:
    The crest and motto are those of Rawson. See DS Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p. 976, where the author explains that this service is the only known to have been made for a British family with green 'Fitzhugh' pattern decoration. He points out that the private English firm of Rawson and Company was one of seven trading at Canton in the 1820s.
