  In Penleigh Boyd's short life he produced a significant body of landscape paintings and was best known for his exquisite wattle paintings. Boyd had an exceptional artistic pedigree, belonging to the famous Boyd dynasty. He was the son of Arthur Merric and Emma Minnie Boyd and his son, Robin Boyd, was a distinguished Melbourne architect. Boyd began his artistic career in his early teens as a student of The Melbourne National Gallery School under the guidance of Frederick McCubbin and Bernard Hall. At the conclusion of his studies in 1909 he exhibited at the Victorian Artists' Society. From mid-1914 Boyd lived in Warrandyte on the Yarra River, Melbourne, interrupted briefly by his war service from 1915 until March 1918. Boyd found the idyllic environs in Warrandyte, which inspired much of his best work.
