  • Notes:
John Glover, Australia's pre-eminent nineteenth century landscape painter had a well established career in Britain before moving to Tasmania in 1861 at the age of 64. His views of picturesque English and Italian landscapes were in the Romantic tradition, wide sweeping landscapes with towering mountains, soaring trees, and small figures, dwarfed by their surroundings. The two works that are being offered at Leonard Joel have been in a private collection since the 1970s and perfectly represent John Glover's technique. Wooded River Landscape with Anglers and Cattle in the Foreground presents a bucolic scene of cattle sedately drinking from a river and two fishermen, one lying on the riverbank, awaiting their catch in the shade of an enormous tree. A bridge arched across the river gives some clue to its location and original title - could it be At Matlock from the Bridge1 or is it Reading Bridge2 as canvassed by Dr Hansen, author of John Glover and the Colonial Picturesque (2003). Both bridges are situated near churches with similar styled Gothic towers, however Glover does not depict any glimpse of the respective townships. It may be difficult to pin point an exact location as Glover was known to manipulate perspective in order to achieve his aesthetic and compositional aims. According to Dr David Hansen, it is likely that Glover's Alpine scene, A Mountainous Wooded Landscape with Cattle by a Lake, is probably Castel Mont Juvat in the Val D'Aoste. This subject was exhibited in 1820 when Glover staged his own exhibition at 16 Old Bond Street.3 The Alpine scene displays Glover's classic compositional manner of a dark foreground, contrasted with an expansive, light drenched background, interspersed with pink and blue-hued clouds. Other classic elements identified through Dr Hansen' scholarship as belonging to Glover's repertoire include the cattle on the river's edge and the human figures functioning as a supporting cast.
