  folio. all twelve parts in the original pictorial wrappers as issued. some plates missing. some loose pages. wrappers marked in places. some foxing, mainly to preliminaries and page edges. volume I: spine and cover torn on part 1; bottom right hand section of cover missing from part 3; wrappers missing from part 4. Volume II: tape repair to cover of part 4 lower left; tape repair to back cover of part 5. (12)
• Notes:
  Volume I of this work consists of 7 parts which were completed between 1875 and 1882 and feature the lithography of Arthur J. Stopps. However, Volume II, the 5th part of which was completed by his friend Henry Dean after the Fitzgerald's death in 1892, consists of 5 parts only. The exquisite lithographs, some of which occupy a double page, were based on Fitzgerald's dissections, with the plates bearing the inscription 'from Nature by R. D. FItzgerald F. L. S.' Artists executed additional hand colouring following Fitzgerald's instructions. The scientific and artistic merits of this landmark publication were widely praised, with the noted British botanist, J. D. Hooker, deeming it 'a work which would be an honour to any country and to any Botanist.'
