  • Lot Description:
[Maning, Frederick Edward]/A 'Pakeha Maori' - History of the war in the north of New Zealand against the chief Heke. In the year 1845.
Told by an old chief of the Ngapuhi tribe. Faithfully translated by a 'Pakeha Maori'. 1st ed. Auckland : Published by George T Chapman, [1862?]. 8vo. 52p. 3339. Maroon leather. Mild wear to binding. Some wear and soiling to contents. Inscription on title page: 'The Editor of New Zealander / with the publishers / compliments'. Stamp of A F McDonnell, bookseller, on title page. A delightful but extravagant whimsy in which Maning records his version of the campaign as through the eyes and tongue of a participant on Heke's side. He continually projects his own views and opinions on the operations and, apart from the banality of the conclusion, successfully sustains the illusion to the end. An attractive copy of a this important and scarce work. G.
