  • Notes:
The Dja Dja Wurrung broad shield was collected between 1852 and 1864 by George William Kidman (1832-1888), originally from Streatley, Bedfordshire, England, who came to Australia as part of the gold rush aboard the SC Indian thatÊlanded in October 1852. This shield bears a fine quasi-symmetrical design of parallel undulating lines etched into the front surface in four quadrants divided by narrow vertical and horizontal recessed lines. Similar broad shields are illustrated in Cooper, C. et al., Aboriginal Australia, Sydney: Australian Gallery Directors Council, 1981, pp.87-88, plate S43, a Victorian broad shield in the R. E. Johns Collection at the Burke Museum in Beechworth, Victoria; plate S44 (and colour plate 11) another in the collection of the Museum of Victoria; S45 in the Christensen Collection at the National Gallery of Victoria; and plate S46 (and colour plate 11) from the Lower Murray area in the collection of the Museum of Victoria. See also a broad shield illustrated in Black, R., Old and New Aboriginal Art, Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1964, p.85, fig.73. Kidman married Mary Ann Ambridge in 1855. He established a mining claim and owned aÊpropertyÊat Kennedy's Gully in Guildford, Victoria. At the time his property was adjacent to the Franklinford protectorateÊestablishedÊin June 1841 by Edward Stone Parker. Parker had been appointed the Assistant Protector of Aborigines in the Port Phillip district under the Protector George Robinson who assigned him to the Loddon River area in the central highlands of Victoria. This important shield was collected at the Kidman's Kennedy's Gully property. Kidman amassed a collection of artefacts from the Dja Dja Wurrung who lived on the protectorate adjoining his property and showed compassion and kindnessÊforÊthe Aborigines and traded numerous artefacts with them for supplies.
