Lot Description:A fine quality contemporary Maori woven mat (whariki) by Te Atiwei Ririnui
the natural unstained flax ground with repeating diagonal bands of black and red stained zig-zag design, with loop and rod suspension for wall hanging. 1730 x 990. -
Notes:Ririnui is of Ngapuhi, Ngai Terangi descent and of Ngati Ranginui iwi. The attached label inscribed: “Whariki, Tapou, Tamata pattern”and ‘Karu o te Whenua’. This mat was woven in the presence of H.R.H. Prince Charles and was destined as a gift to him, this did not eventuate and was purchased directly from the artist weaver.
