    1st ed. London : Chapman and Hall ; Melbourne and Sydney : George Robertson, 1883. 8vo. Volume I: viii, 655p. Folding map. Volume II: 606p. two plans, geneaological table, diagram. Volume III: 540, 32p. Publishers' catalogue. 4947. Decorated green cloth. Some wear and foxing. Tape repairs to reverse of map in volume I. Harsh criticism of the Crown's policies toward the Maori. Rusden accuses Native Minister John Bryce of killing women and children in an incident at Handley's woolshed during the Taranaki war. Bryce sued Rusden for libel and the case was heard in the High Court in London. The verdict went against Rusden and his book was suppressed. A handsome set of the unexpurgated first edition. G. [3].
