John Noone (Active Melbourne 1858-1888) - Panorama of Melbourne from the Tower of Dr. Fitzgerald's Residence
taken December 1869. Set of seven albumen paper prints from mammoth plates. A previously unrecorded complete set of seven albumen paper prints forming a panorama of Melbourne by "the first photographer" of Melbourne. John Noone. Taken from the tower of Dr. Fitzgerald's Lonsdale Street West residence in December 1869, the views show the principal buildings of the City at that time; St Patrick's Cathedral in the course of erection.
    Images 387 x 270mm, frames 550 x 630mm
  • Notes:
John Noone exhibited in the photographic section at the 1870 Sydney Intercolonial Exhibition a set of seven views of Melbourne, which were highly commended by the jury. This complete set, of which individual examples are known in State Collections, is previously unrecorded, and it is thought no other complete set survives in their original frames. They are contained in the original plain gilded huon pine frames and backing boards. Collectively, with their original plain gilded frames and gilt brass hanging loops to the rear, they allow us to see a complete panorama, from an early period, as presented for hanging & exhibition
