    An important Australian secretaire
    cedar, huon with ebony inlay & knobs, huon pine secondaries. Signed under bottom draw "Thos. Bladley. New South Wales, 1st July 1819". Thomas Bladey was an apprentice to Lawrence Butler (see 19th Century Australian Furniture, David Ell Press, Sydney [1985]). A fine piece of early cabinet making showing features such as cockbeading & string inlaid interior drawers. This would make this piece of furniture one of the earliest known signed pieces made by an Australian born cabinet maker. 19th Century and later.
