Lot Description:1881 STEEPLECHASE TROPHY: A gold mounted Claret Jug
unmarked (tests as 15ct), the collar engraved with hounds and arabesques between two beaded bands, cartouche engraved "The Melbourne Hunt Club Steeple Chase, October 1st 1881 - Won by Young Deceiver, the property of John E.Spicer, Esq", the lid with finial modelled as a horse, the flared trumpet shaped clear glass body with cut and ribbed pattern, 29cm tall. Appears to be the work of renowned silversmith Edward Fischer of Geelong (1828-1911). -
Notes:The 1881 annual Steeple Chase, held at Flemington, was run twice; the first race was declared void as the first two horses missed the last jump. Young Deceiver won the restarted race with the time of 6 minutes.
