Notes:Honda's first production car was launched in October 1963. Its chain-driven rear wheels pointed to the company's motorcycle origins. With extra ordinary talent and ambition Honda was winning motorcycle championships against all expectations and had the foresight to develop open wheeler Grand Prix cars as early as 1964, winning the Mexican Grand Prix in 1965. The S Series was Honda's mighty leap into mass producing motor cars. The power train was a DOHC, water-cooled, inline four-cylinder and by virtue of four carburettors, designated a Sports model, producing 57 hp (43 kW) at 8,500 rpm with a top speed of 90 mph (140 km) so basically, it screamed but didn't go very fast. Independent suspension, unique sealed roller chain drive to each rear wheel, the initial S360 model was underpowered even with 4 carburettors and was replaced with the S-500. That didn't work either resulting in the 606cc Honda S-600 bing developed. Initially only built in right-hand drive both the S600 roadster and coupé were available in standard and special trims (SM600) and ultimately built in LHD to appeal to the burgeoning export market. (A few pre-production S500s LHD's were built and shown in early sales material) Production climbed: 3,912 roadsters built in 1964, to 7,261 convertibles and 1,519 coupes in 1965. Total production was 11,284 convertibles and 1,800 coupes for the 3 year span. Honda went on to build the S800. This endearing example of the S600 is finished in dark blue livery with vinyl black interior and leather hood.
