Erasmus (1467?-1536) was the most famous and influential humanist of the Northern Renaissance, a man of great talent and industriousness who rose from obscure beginnings to become the leading intellectual figure of the early 16th century. His 'Enchiridion militis Christiani' ('Handbook of the Christian soldier'), first published in 1503, was addressed not to the monks and contemplatives who had withdrawn from secular life but to a Christian layman who needed spiritual guidance.
