  • Notes:
    A four folding panel screen containing 32 separate woodcuts by the artist, all but one from the 1858 Views of Mt Fuji series, with each woodcut lacquered down into 4 series of 8 panels (each view CHECK SIZE PLEASE). Each of the four folding screens is 185 x 57 x 8 cm, and to reverse can be seen Victorian decoupage elements on three panels developed c1880 - 1905, and a batik pinned there by Pat Morley. Lewis Morley purchased this in London in 1963 and this was a feature of their home in Richmond till 1971. It was folded in the Morley living room till this sale. A 24 image panel of Hiroshige's 1852 landscape Views exists, and James Whistler in Paris on Hiroshige's death, responded both in subject and application to his work 'The Little White Girl' (1864) which shows a large screen with the model looking at his own Hiroshige woodcuts. Whistler, Tissot, Manet and Menpes owned several screens, and collected Hiroshige, but firesales for Whistler and Menpes don't show the screens sold in L
