    Nelson Illingworth (1862-1926)
    plaster bust of Tamati Waka Nene, naturalistically modelled and with a bronze finish showing his moko, bare shoulders, raised on sculpted base. Height 640.
  • Notes:
    Nene born c.1780s was the second son of Tapua, leader of the Ngati Hao of Hokianga. He had connections with many major chiefs of the upper North Island and other places. He was distinguished as a war leader, he became the highest-ranking chief among his own people. It is noted that he became the protector of the Wesleyan Mission and Traders in the early 19thC, he saw advantages of the Pakeha presence. Nene was one of the most influential supporters in the debate at Waitangi over the Treaty and he was one of the first to sign. He agreed that the Governor should be as a father, judge and peace maker, he declared that Maori customs should be preserved and their lands should never be wrested from them. Nelson Illingworth born in England studied at the Lambeth Art School before working as a modeller at the Doulton Potteries, he emigrated to Sydney in 1892 completing a large number of portrait busts of notable men of the time, he also spent time in N.Z. and modelled a number of busts of notable Maori chiefs at the request of the N.Z. government. A similar bust of Tupaia completed 1908 is held in the collection of Te Papa.
