  • Notes:
Paul Boston's work often reflects his interest in Zen Philosophy, haiku and ceramics. In fact, "The juxtaposition of ideas; the finding of opposites, was a part of Boston's early art education, which he cites as being 'exceptionally eclectic'. At Preston Tech, his mentor was Dale Hickey who brought him the American influences emanating from Pinacotheca in Melbourne at the time; the countervailing energies of Pop and Conceptual Art. The other pole in what he describes as his art education was his time spent with John Reed when he was working as a gardener two or three times a week at Heidi."1 Sasha Grishin observed that Boston "...is sometimes considered an artists' artist, one who is highly regarded by his peers. In his work he has followed a relatively insular path, largely immune to fashions and fads. There is a certain restraint and elegance in his paintings...They are enormously complex and sophisticated paintings, but stated with such utter simplicity as to appear effortless and possessing an inner sense of logic."2 His work was included in a major exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1986, Backlash: The Australian Drawing Revival 1976-86. The year after Head with Closed Eyes was created, Boston won his first award, the Inaugural Savage Drawing Prize, Melbourne in 1987. Boston has held numerous solo and group exhibitions and is represented in major State, corporate and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art (Brisbane), The Loti and Victor Smorgon Collection, Melbourne and Sussan Corporation, Melbourne.
