    A framed facsmilie of 'La Mer des histories' by Pierre le Rouge
  • Notes:
    520mm x 360mm, (including frame). Wood frame with glass. Provenance: From the collection of Leo Bensemann. Includes a handwritten note by Bensemann describing the print: 'A page from 'La Mer des histories' printed by Pierre le Rouge in 1488-89. There is a pencil note in the British Museum copy stating that the work was the first fifteenth century folio to have a title page. The type is Lettre Batarde and the initals and the elaborate borders are woodcuts. This splendid facsimilie was printed letterpress and published by the Reichsdruckerei, Berlin, and this sheet is one of the few copies that survived the air raids of World War II'. VG.
