Occasional foxing to contents. 'Most of the text is an outline of Maori origins, legends and custom, the work of the missions of all denominations, European colonisation and its consequences, to the Maori land wars. However his most valuable contribution is within the first 152 pages where he recalls his initial posting as a Wesleyan missonary to Mangungu (Hokianga) from 1836 until his founding of Tangiteroria (Kaipara) mission in 1838. The narrative is enlivened by his recollections of Maori life, the numerous friends of both races, events such as the arrival of De Thierry, his 1839-40 walk to Cook Strait, etc. His later work in Wellington, Thames, Canterbury and Auckland is summarised.' - Bagnall. A sound copy. G.
