    A pair of 18thC Chinese armorial export porcelain octagonal plates
    one with small rim frits, painted with the arms of Dean King of Skelling in Yorkshire who died in 1795. Of his five sons, 2nd Lt. James King accompanied Capt. Cook on his last voyage to N.Z. in 1776 and was later appointed Captain to command Discovery on the death of Cook. His cousin Henry King had sailed with Anson and was living in Liverpool in 1776. Of the more than 5,000 armorial services produced in the 18thC, less than half a dozen have any association with N.Z., the Dean King armorial being one of those. Width 220.
