three tables only being recorded. The hexagonal top is decorated with complex inlaid geometric patterns incorporating star motifs within hexagonal fields, the main central element framed by a circle of lanceolate pennants and by a further broad border repeating the star motifs within a geometric ribbon which forms an outline of hexagons framing each star. The design utilises the typical figured and coloured timbers including kauri, burr totara, black maire and rewarewa. The double thumb nail moulded edged top is raised on a tripod base with baluster turned columns. Diameter 850, height 745. Scottish born Penman reputedly trained in cabinet making and marquetry in Edinburgh and emigrated to New Zealand with family in 1900. Failing to secure work in the trade in New Zealand, he produced this table and two others from his home workshop in Grey Lynn. See inside back cover.
