    Matau – Fish Hook
    A fine, early matau made from a trained branch or root. Dark wooden shank that extends to form the point limb; missing point; carved notch for binding evident. Carved spirals on the shank. Lashed snood, no line. Inscribed in black ink: 'WEB.COL 1599'.
    L.287mm, W.98mm.

    Kenneth Athol Webster collection No. 1599, New Zealand. Acquired by Webster from 'H. Mus. Glas'. Possibly referring to the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow, Scotland. Private collection, New Zealand.
