• Notes:
  Matham's (1571-1631) engraving, based on a drawing by his step-father Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617), was published in 1598. For a similar print see Swann Galleries, New York, May 21, 2020, lot 252. This engraving 'is particularly important as a prototype for both whale print iconography and 17th century Dutch landscape. This particular depiction of a sperm whale was to be copied for two hundred years in European stranded whale and natural history prints' (Whaling Prints in the Francis B. Lothrop Collection, Ingalls p.190).
