  • Notes:
Exhibiting in Australia since 1980, New Zealand born Thornton Walker has made a name for himself as one of Australia's most accomplished and well-collected tonal painters. With a highly developed skill for placing immaculately rendered objects and figures onto backdrops of shifting texture and tone, the artist's style represents tonal painting at its most arresting. In The Homage (II) the viewer finds themselves captivated on two levels: through the virtuosity with which the image is rendered and the deeply meditative nature of the composition. The richly textural application of paint creates a surface against which the two small vessels with words smoking out of them seem to float. These bowls, a recognizable motif of the artist, anchor the viewer allowing an exploration of the dreamlike skyscape, representing what the artist describes as 'stillness or a frozen moment'.1 A slightly smaller companion to this work, The Homage can be found in the Deakin Art collection. 1 Thornton Walker, Interview with Prof Sasha Grishin, 'Thornton Walker: What Now?'
