  • Notes:
    This play by D Boucicault, based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas père, was first performed in England at the Princess's Theatre, London, in 1852. According to the J S Maas certificate of authenticity verso, this work was painted while the play was running, with the dying figure being a portrait of the actor Charles Kean, and the standing figure Alfred Wigan. Another version of the work was in the Royal Collection, Windsor, as of July 1985 (see image); and this image was used to illustrate the accompanying sheet music to the play
