two mezzotint engravings by J. R. Smith. 1791. trimmed. Mounted.
    46 x 62.5cm and 40.5 x 64cm. (2).
  • Notes:
Note: This pair of prints, which was published at the height of the anti-slavery movement, juxtaposes an image of Africans helping a shipwrecked European family (African Hospitality) with a depiction of an African man being forcibly separated from his wife and child by European slave traders (The Slave Trade). These prints are a departure from Morland's typical depictions of English country scenes and were most probably inspired by a poem written by his friend, William Collins.
