  • Notes:
In 1944 Nolan returned to Melbourne after two years' service in the Wimmera district. It was rumoured that men were to be deployed to serve on the frontline in the Pacific campaign. He successfully applied for leave without pay to enable him to work for John Reed's publishing company for a month but when this ended on 20 August Nolan went into hiding in a friend's converted stable in Parkville. Using the name Robin Murray, he moved between John and Sunday Reed at Heide and his inner city stable for the remainder of the war. Visits to the beach around this time, photographed by fellow artist Albert Tucker, suggest that the subject of this work is Sunday Reed or Joy Hester. The stripes of the skirt re-surface two years later when they are applied to Kelly's helmet and armour in The Chase, 1946, in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
