• Notes:
  With its muted palette emphasizing shadows and the faceless figure at the forefront, Tree and Figure Mosman, 1990 immediately invokes a sense of foreboding and isolation. Macleod skilfully presents the complex relationship between the figure and the landscape, a theme which has preoccupied the artist throughout his career. The typical solitary figure can be interpreted in several ways: as the artist himself or as humankind. In Macleod's work, often nature is as much a protagonist as the human figure, or indeed, more so. In this case, the twisting limbs of the tree and its wide-reaching shadow are as ominous a presence as the figure before it whose face, though barely visible, nonetheless presents an unsettling gaze. Though Macleod's work is often biographical, he is simultaneously trying to understand, but also asking us, to question our place in the world.
