The Collection of Judith Conroy & the Late Doctor David Conroy

  • Auction House:
  • Reference:
    #1312
  • Description:
When David and Judith Conroy went to London in 1961 for David to further his medical studies, they decided also to pursue their shared interest in antiques. Through a mutual friend they were referred to a young Australian antique dealer, then living in Greenwich, Bill Johnston. For the Conroys and for Bill Johnston the introduction was the source of a lifelong friendship based on a mutual enjoyment and appreciation of Georgian furniture, porcelain, silver and paintings. During the ensuing years Judith and David, with Bill's assistance amassed a superb collection purchased either from Kent Antiques in Malvern or under Bill's guidance from the major auction houses.

Such was Bill Johnston's regard for David Conroy's acumen and integrity that he appointed him the executor of his will and the trustee of the W R Johnston Trust. David with his co trustees established the Johnston House Museum in East Melbourne. On David's retirement, Judith replaced him as a trustee.

This collection, so strongly influenced by the taste and knowledge of Bill Johnston, has provided Judith and the late David Conroy with great pleasure over many years and it will continue to do so for many others in the years to come.
