The Whitmont Collection

  • Auction House:
  • Reference:
    #0073
  • Description:
Held tightly in the family for nearly 50 years, this house was owned by one of the Whitmonts of the famed shirt brand. Followers of Australian business history will know that the family played an integral part in the textile and clothing industry history. Indeed, the "man with a patch over one eye" was their recognisable icon across three continents.
The contents of this beautiful home with serene Middle Harbour views are now available to the public for the first time via an on site auction. They comprise the personal collection of Milton Whitmont and his late wife Helen. Milton, the youngest of the three sons who worked alongside their father in the family business, was a collector of art and artefacts. Included are a unique collection of African carvings which were carefully chosen on his many twice-annual business trips which started in South Africa and ended in Ethiopia. There are also some prized ivories which have been in the family for generations, some unique bronze and silver pieces, rare fine Asian Ivories as well as paintings by Ray Crooke, James Gleeson and a very rare early Pro Hart.
